The 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals will be held in Pontevedra, Spain, from Wednesday, 23 September, to Sunday, 27 September. World Triathlon confirmed the dates after Pontevedra successfully hosted previous World Cup and European events, and the city replaces Wollongong, Australia, which held the 2025 finals in October.

The week opens on 23 September with the Parade of Nations and Opening Ceremony, followed by competition from 24 September. Pontevedra's compact course layout — with the swim in the Ría de Pontevedra, bike and run segments through the city centre — has earned a reputation as one of the most spectator-friendly venues on the circuit.

Race schedule across five days

Thursday, 24 September, features junior women's and men's races plus age-group sprint triathlon. Friday brings paratriathlon and under-23 events. Saturday, 26 September, includes age-group standard and aquabike races alongside the elite women's final at 6:00 p.m. The week concludes on Sunday, 27 September, with mixed relays in the morning and the elite men's final at 6:00 p.m.

Age-group athletes can register for sprint, standard, and aquabike distances, with Spanish federated members receiving discounted entry fees. More than 4,000 athletes from over 60 nations participated when Torremolinos, Spain, hosted the 2024 finals, and Pontevedra expects comparable numbers.

What the finals decide

The Championship Finals crown the elite world champions for the season, with points accumulated across the World Triathlon Championship Series determining start-list positions and favourite status. For age-group competitors, a world title in Pontevedra represents the pinnacle of amateur triathlon.

Pontevedra's selection continues Spain's strong recent record of hosting World Triathlon's flagship events, with courses published in advance for swim, bike, and run segments across all categories.
